Central, homely and unique are but a few ways to describe the eye-catching Old Joint Stock Pub and Theatre, in the heart of Birmingham City Centre just a short walk from Snow Hill station and New Street Station. Born originally as a library in 1862 then later a bank, this decadent and richly decorated…
Description
Saraya Haddad presents her one-woman play about the time she
performed a play she doesn’t remember. Join her in this fictional
retelling of the astonishing time she played Ariel in Shakespeare's
The Tempest, whilst spiked. One minute she was in her campus bar,
about to leave for the show, the next… blackout. Watch her piece
together the past 13 hours, pushing herself back up to the surface
and out of the spiker's control. Laugh with her, and cry with her,
as she notices the uncanny parallels between Shakespeare's play and
the experience of having her bodily autonomy washed away.
Grappling with the fact an anonymous person had wiped out her
bodily autonomy, her memory and left her performing a play so
inebriated that she could barely speak, felt like a tsunami. Since
she was a teenager The Tempest has been one of Saraya's favourite
Shakespeare plays, and in the days after being spiked she noticed
the eerie parallels between the play and her spiking. Shakespeare’s
play revolves around a magician, Prospero, who uses his magical
powers to colonise, control and puppeteer those around him. She
played Ariel, a magical spirit enslaved by Prospero; who longs to
be set free. Prospero’s magic has the power to mind-alter, to
disorientate, to erase characters’ memories, just like a spiking
drug. Watch as she tries to find her way back to shore.
